Fold cloth baby diaper - how to

New materials and ways of folding make it possible to have just one size of diaper for the entire time your baby will wear them. Moreover, this can be made to fit him at every stage of his development. Some methods of diapering are the panel fold and the kite fold, described below. These put the extra thickness in the middle where it's needed, while fitting Baby's dimensions quite comfortably.

1. Panel fold for oblong diaper. Bring right end over to about 8 inches from left end. Turn right end back upon itself to about 3 inches from fold. Now bring the left end over even with first fold on the extreme right.

2. Kite fold for square diaper. Fold in two sides to make a long V. Turn down the remaining flap, forming triangle. Bring point of V up to the straight edge of flap. Makes thick center panel.

3. Fold over one-third of end of square diaper. Then fold to three thicknesses. Extra thickness in front for boys, in back for girls if they lie on their backs. Fits the infant comfortably, but not adjustable as the baby
grows.

4. Fitted diapers are available or can be made. Double row of fasteners makes the diaper adjustable as Baby grows. Extra thickness is provided in the center where it's needed. This diaper can also be fastened with pins.

As Baby expands, you will have to change from either the kite fold or panel fold, and adopt the triple fold for oblong diapers or a double fold for square diapers.

Besides the square and oblong diapers, there are fitted ones which fasten with tapes or gripper-type fasteners, and also several types of disposable ones. As well as for use at home, these make trips and outings easier.

Also available are paper diaper liners. Placed between Baby's buttocks and the diaper to catch the bowel movements, they prevent hard-to-remove stains.

Waterproof outer diapers should be used only for outings or dress-up occasions. They may chafe Baby's skin if used continuously. And there is also a tendency not to change the diaper as often as necessary. These diapers should be made of a porous, washable material, or else be loose enough so they won't be airtight. Neither kind should bind.
